Experience the Japanese winter at the “Oden & Jizake Festival”

Held in Tokyo’s Ueno Park, the “Oden & Jizake Festival” is a food event where you can enjoy the flavors of Japanese winter all in one place. Beginning in 2023, it has attracted visitors from afar as an outdoor winter event, and in 2026 it will celebrate its fourth edition.
Oden is a classic winter dish loved in Japanese households. Ingredients such as daikon radish, eggs, and chikuwa are slowly simmered in a broth made from katsuobushi (dried, shaved bonito flakes) and kombu (kelp), creating a comforting, warming flavor that penetrates to the core.

At this event, a tachinomi (standing-style drinking and eating) format has been introduced so that visitors can casually enjoy oden outdoors. Natural conversations start with the people standing nearby, creating warm opportunities for connection.

Ueno Park is also conveniently located near Tokyo Station and easily accessible by Shinkansen. Its location is ideal not only for domestic visitors but also for travelers from overseas, offering a unique chance to experience the flavors of Japan from all over the country in one place.

A gathering of oden and local sake from all over Japan

The venue will feature unique regional oden styles from 24 areas across Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. These include “Okinawan oden with tebichi (pig’s feet),” where the rich pork flavor blends beautifully with the broth, and “Hiroshima oyster oden,” known for its plump, juicy oysters.

In addition to classic mustard, a variety of regional condiments will be available, such as ginger miso from the Tohoku region and yuzu pepper from Kyushu, allowing you to enjoy the subtle differences in regional flavors.

A wide selection of local sake from each region is also a highlight not to be missed. By pairing oden with sake from the same area, you can gain a deeper appreciation of that region’s culture and climate.

If you are visiting with friends or family, we recommend purchasing oden from different regions and sharing small portions to enjoy a fun tasting comparison. The venue can get crowded and lines may be long, but by enjoying your oden and sake while waiting, you can make the most of your time and experience as many regional flavors as possible.

Warm your body and soul with “Dashi-wari”

An experience especially recommended for international visitors is “dashi-wari,” a uniquely Japanese way of drinking. This is made by mixing Japanese sake with oden broth, resulting in a mellow, savory, and fragrant drink. It is sometimes sold in cups, but visitors familiar with dashi-wari may even pour sake into their oden bowls after finishing the ingredients, while the broth remains, to create their own personal blend.

Try finding your favorite combination according to the type of oden and the flavor of the broth.

Please note that most booths accept cash only, with the exception of a few vendors. As credit cards may not be accepted everywhere, be sure to bring cash with you.

In the open and friendly atmosphere unique to tachinomi festivals, enjoy a heartwarming moment with oden and hot sake in hand. Whether you come in a group or on your own, everyone is welcome. We invite you to experience both Japanese food culture and the joy of human connection at the Oden & Jizake Festival.
