Experience the bounty of Japan’s seas all at once

The “Fish Japan Festival (Sakana Japan Fest),” held at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo, is a large-scale gourmet seafood festival where you can enjoy fresh seafood dishes from all over Japan in one place. It began in 2019 and has since grown into a popular event attracting approximately 240,000 visitors over four days.

Japan is surrounded by the sea and has long cultivated a food culture centered on fish. In recent years, however, opportunities to eat fish have been on the decline. With the desire to help more people rediscover the appeal of eating fish, this festival was created.

At the venue, a wide variety of seasonal Japanese seafood is gathered, including tuna, salmon, crab, salmon roe, oysters, and more. Each ingredient is prepared using local seasonings and traditional cooking methods, and served in a wide range of dishes such as seafood rice bowls, fishermen’s meals, ramen, and paella. As one of the largest seafood-consuming cities in Japan, Tokyo provides the perfect location for fresh delicacies from all over the country to come together.

Supporting local regions through seafood & hands-on experiences

One of the greatest appeals of the Fish Japan Festival is that visitors can support regional communities across Japan simply by enjoying delicious seafood. As part of this initiative, the “Discover! Fukushima Fish Festival” is held simultaneously at the venue. This project supports areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and encourages the recovery of the fishing industry. Seafood from Fukushima prefecture, known as “Joban-mono” is highly regarded for its rich flavor. A particularly popular item is the “Fukushima All-Star Bowl” a luxurious seafood bowl topped with seven varieties, including seared blackthroat seaperch (nodoguro). This special dish, available only here, captivates many visitors.

In addition, as part of regional support efforts, rich and creamy “Noto oysters” from Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture, are also available. The fisherman-style “Gangan-yaki” in which oysters are steamed in a can over high heat, is the perfect treat for the cold season.

There are also plenty of interactive experiences. One of the highlights is the “Bluefin Tuna Cutting Show,” where fresh, never-frozen tuna from Takashima in Nagasaki Prefecture is dramatically filleted before your eyes, followed by tastings of different cuts such as lean meat and fatty toro.

From Nishigo Village in Fukushima Prefecture, the popular tourist attraction “Masutsuri Park” brings its rainbow trout fishing pond to the festival, allowing visitors to enjoy an actual fishing experience.

Recommended way to enjoy the festival

The venue offers a covered dining area, and heaters are installed throughout, so you can stay warm and comfortable even in the cold season. Enjoying steaming hot pots, fragrant salt-grilled Pacific saury, and vibrant seafood rice bowls in the crisp winter air is a pleasure unique to this event—where the cold sharpens the appetite and the warmth of the food brings people together. For travelers, enjoying fresh seafood outdoors offers a different kind of charm compared to dining in a restaurant.

Sake lovers will also be delighted. With the cooperation of the Fukushima Sake Brewers Association, a wide selection of local sake will be available, including a “Daiginjo Tasting Set” We recommend pairing them with seafood dishes. Many menu items are also available in smaller portions, making it easy to share with friends and family while sampling a variety of flavors.

The charm of the Fish Japan Festival lies in the ability to enjoy delicious seafood and the cultural diversity of regions all across Japan, almost as if you were on a mini trip around the country. We look forward to welcoming you.
